Redding, California is the county seat of the northern California county of Shasta. It has an approximate population of 81,000. It is the biggest California city located north of Sacramento and it ranks as fourth largest in the Sacramento Valley. In 1887, when the city was incorporated, the population was six hundred people. That number had grown to about thirty-six hundred by 1910. This population was supported by the mineral mining business, mainly iron and copper. These industries created major pollution problems and as they decreased the population also decreased. During the 1930s, the population had recovered and the city was growing due to the construction of Shasta Dam.

The city continued to grow at a regular pace over the next few decades. With the housing and retail boom of the late 1980s, the city's population reached over sixty-six thousand in 1990. The boom continued for about a decade and by the year 2000 the population was almost eighty-one thousand. . Retirees from Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay have flooded into the city looking for a relaxed pace and more affordable housing. The latest population count was approximately 91,000. This has caused the base of the city's economics to move towards legal, medical, and retail as well as tourism. This causes the unemployment rate to be more than state average and wages are lower with very few industrial jobs.
